It Takes a Village
For my research study, I plan to explore the topic of community connection in the United States and how strong community relationships affect health, education, and public safety. Research shows that the strength of relationships between neighbors and community members can have real impacts . My study will examine how communities that invest in connection, support and engagement often experience better health outcomes, stronger educational achievement, and lower crime rates.
I am personally interested in this topic because community plays an important role in everyday life, but in reality it often feels like people today are more disconnected from those around them. I truly believe that together as a community we can achieve anything, if we work together. However I know that people may live in the same neighborhood for years without truly knowing their neighbors. (I am guilty of this as well) Which creates a disconnect and distrust. This lack of connection can affect how safe, supported, and engaged people feel within their communities.
From what I already know, research suggests that social connections within communities have measurable benefits. When people trust their neighbor and participate in local activities, communities often become healthier and safer places to live. There is also evidence that community connection in the United States has declined over time. According to a 2025 Pew Research Center survey, only 26% of Americans say they know “all or most” of their neighbors, and only 44% say they trust most of them. These statistics suggest that many communities may be missing the benefits that strong social ties can provide.
For this research study, I would like to learn more about how community relationships influence real world outcomes such as health, education and crime. While also exploring examples of communities that have strengthened local engagement and the impact those efforts have had on the community. This project will explore why community connection matters and how it influences the lives of everyday people and society.
